The Coordinate Measurement Systems Committee (CMSC), an international group of measurement specialists, offers a variety of measurement and metrology resources on its Web site. Measurement news, information on conferences, a long list of links and CMSC membership application materials are among the features of this site. It also includes a link to a free download of Convert 4.10, software that will convert the most popular units of measurement and has the ability to create custom conversions.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) created this site on measurement traceability (whether the result of a measurement can be related to accepted international or national standards through an unbroken chain of comparisons). It includes units from the International System of Units, the metric system, the English traditional systems, and nonmetric and scientific elements. Created by a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the site is extremely thorough and easy to use.

The Ruth Ellen Carey Communications Manufacturing and Industrial Resource Center site for internal auditors has both free and subscription areas. The free pages include helpful tips, information on certification, an ISO 9000:2000 update and a monthly article.

Do you need to hire an auditor? This Web site, operated by MEON Consulting Group of the United Kingdom, wants to provide you with one. Auditors and auditor groups available for hire through this site specialize in ISO 9000 auditing, documentation review, vendor auditing and process auditing. Even if you're not interested in hiring one of the group's auditors, the site provides basic information on the need for auditing.

The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) publishes timely articles and information on its comprehensive Web site. The Reliability, Maintainability and Supportability Partnership (RMSP) is an organization that fosters networking among organizations and people interested in reliability engineering. Its homepage features free articles, reliability links, the RMSP quarterly newsletter, events listings and job opportunity listings.

The Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP) is devoted to promoting maintenance and reliability education for people, production and quality processes.
