PROGRAM PURPOSE
The Future City Competition is a national
educational program developed by the engineering community to promote education,
technological literacy and engineering to middle school students. The program fosters an interest in
math, science, and engineering through hands-on, real world applications. The competition is open to all
public, private and parochial schools.
The national finals of the Future City Competition are a featured event
during Engineers Week, with students from across the country competing in
GOALS
The Future City Competition offers students an
experiential and fun way to learn about engineering and cities of the future. In addition to the academic elements
of the program, students will:

Work as a team under the guidance
of a teacher and a practicing engineer to create a city of the future.
•
Apply their knowledge to develop a
solution to a real-world problem.
•
Develop a firsthand understanding
of how engineers turn ideas into reality.
•
Design a computer model of their city of the future using the popular SimCity
software.
•
Build a scale model of a section
of their city using recycled items.
•
Utilize their communication skills
by preparing a report outlining key city design features, a research essay and a
verbal presentation relating their experience in the design of their city and
selected engineering features.
Students participating in the Future City
